Although I could not imagine it at the time, my artistic career began in high school with pencil drawings of characters from the popular Japanese manga series, Dragon Ball Z. Encouraged by my family and the kind words of people who had seen my drawings, upon graduating, I left my small town in northern Nicaragua to attend the School of Fine Arts in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

It was at La Escuela de Bellas Artes that I received my first art lessons. In 2000, I left school and began working as a still life painter for my uncle’s home decorations company. I painted bodegones using a mixture of oil paint and lithographic ink. These paintings were sold by door to door salesmen who traveled across Honduras. Seven years later I came to the United States where I began to focus on painting exclusively in oils. Today, I continue to focus my work on still life, although my interests have broadened to include figurative work in which I like to acknowledge the people and culture of my home country.

My paintings, rendered in a realistic manner, are an expression of my own observations and respect for nature and of the beauty that can be found in everyday life. I paint in my home studio where I like to set up compositions under soft, natural light. I paint directly from life and occasionally I refer to photographs that I have taken of my subjects. I enjoy working with oils because their easy blending of color allows me to create a more truthful rendering of the objects in my composition. Through harmony of color and respect for detail I hope to share with the viewer my admiration and enjoyment for the little things around us.
